Why The Next Diet Will Make You Fatter

Everyone wants to lose fat and get results fast?  We want it and we want it now right?
 
So, the fitness industry feeds us these awesome diets promising to lose 5lbs a day and to shred 50 lbs a month and so forth right?  This is where it all goes wrong for the body.
 
Here is a little tutorial on how the metabolism works and why crash dieting like this actually makes you more fat.
 
The metabolic rate of the body is regulated by T3, a hormone secreted from the thyroid gland, and other like hormones.  When we eat a certain amount of food, especially carbs, we have a metabolic rate that is usually floating around the same level as those calories ingested.
 
When we drop calories, our metabolism drops as well to meet the new dietary demands.  That means, if you place the body in a huge caloric deficit, the metabolism reacts and plummets to very low levels.  Once you decide to get off the 500 calorie a day diet, and you eat more food again, your metabolism can’t catch up in time.
 
That means you go back to eating normal and you put the weight on faster and more than you started with.  This is called metabolic damage.
 
There needs to be more strategic caloric deficits with the right training to enable a high functioning metabolism still.  This way, you can shred the pounds and not sabotage the very engine that enables you to burn calories, that being your metabolic rate.
 
A more efficient model is a 200 calorie deficit per day for women and a 20% caloric deficit for men.
 
If you’re a woman, and your basal metabolic rate is 1500 calories (metabolism at rest), and you complete a workout burning an additional 500 calories, your total calorie expenditure is 2000.  A proper caloric deficit would be 1800 a day.  This is then recalibrated approximately every week or two weeks based on weight loss and fat loss.  As long as these calories are regulated by a specific protein-carb-fat ratio, one should lose the fat they want while still maintaining a fairly healthy metabolism and overall hormonal balance.
 
Once you are in this perfect caloric deficit, and you’ve attained your ideal body composition, you can do what is called a reverse diet where you systematically increase caloric intake again to bring the metabolic rate back up.  Here is where people can enjoy normal eating again and still maintain a healthy weight.
